about

In Autumn of 2001 I moved to downtown Los Angeles
725 S. Spring downstairs from legendary Chicano painter Gronk.

In the morning he would make me coffee & paint
For him I would strum & sing new songs.
The first I wrote were "Tagalong Shadow" & "Secrets".

After coffee & art jabbering I would walk downstairs to record on my 4 track cassette.
The first sound I made in this huge space was the drums on "More Beats"
I was curious if cumbia worked in LA or if it was TX mojo only.

Of course now this area is called DTLA
I called it Browntown back then because everyone there was brown.
Brown from dirt, grime, filth or birth.

I would make quick cassette mixes to a CD burner & make copies
One at a time for my weekly Largo gigs
Hand decorated black sharpie.
